Curtis and Ella Payne are preparing to celebrate their wedding anniversary. But the celebration is interrupted when Curtis and his nephew, C.J., who are both firefighters, are called away to a house fire. After they return, however, they bring with them the news that the house that was on fire belonged to C.J., his wife, Janine, and their two children, Malik and Jasmine. With no house to call a home, C.J. moves his family into the basement of Curtis and Ella's house, a situation about which nobody is very happy.

C.J. and Janine's relationship starts to get worse when C.J. finds out that Janine hasn't been paying the bills for their house. Meanwhile, Curtis and Malik start bonding after the television system blows up.

Curtis has problems with Malik's new outfit and C.J.'s current living condition puts him in a bad mood.

C.J. is attracted to Malik's math teacher, Miss Nicole Jamieson. Meanwhile, Ella has to tell Claretha some bad news about her involvement with the church.

Curtis and Ella go away for the weekend forcing CJ to have to spend the weekend alone with his kids and surprise guest Claretha.

C.J.'s efforts to get back in the dating scene are thwarted as Pops and Claretha follow him during his date with Claretha's daughter. Meanwhile, Curtis tries to have his monthly poker game while babysitting his grandchildren.

While Curtis is away, Ella gets a visit from Janine who asks Ella to help her get her life together. Things get serious between C.J. and Malik's math teacher.

After finishing her stay in rehab, Janine asks Ella if she could move back in.

When Ella gets sick, Curtis takes on more responsibilities. C.J. struggles to adapt to living with Janine again.

While C.J. is less than inclined to meet Janine's new boyfriend, Curtis studies painting.
